Why I chose this book to read.
I am an avid book reader, and I, like so many others, have thought for so long about writing my own book. After some time watching videos at YouTube University, I came across a couple of videos that were similarly titled, Write a Book (Even if no one reads it).
Taking this to heart, I finally decided to write my first book. It’s a fiction that is set in a dystopian-like era. I told a few friends about it, and one of them recommended two books that I have never heard of, to read for inspiration: 1984 by George Orwell and War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky).
I’ve read 1984 and absolutely loved it. Now I am reading two books at the same time, and one of them is, you guessed it, War and Peace.
What I think of it so far.
I did not realize the book was over 1,000 pages before I bought it. It will be the biggest book I have ever read when I finish it. I also looked at the translation I am reading up on Audible, and it is 60 hours long.
It’s not the first Russian book I have read. That goes to Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I am also trying to learn other languages, like German and Russian, so little pieces of German sprinkled in the book are a welcoming touch. I am enjoying the little glimpses of Russian culture and the way of life in the early 19th century that it presents.
The more I read it and research the author who wrote it, the more I can understand why several pieces of art (movies, books, games, etc) were created with this book somewhere in their foundations.
With me juggling reading two books and writing, it will take quite some time before I finish this book. When I do, I will come back with a book review. So far, having read 248 pages of it, I do recommend the book to other readers.
